The Miracle of the Present

Yesterday, I visited the Mount Bachelor Resort in Bend, Oregon for the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association luncheon. The drive from the Willamette Valley is gorgeous–  with red, orange, and yellow leaves, shimmering lakes and rivers along the highway, and giant Fir trees appearing like embroidery on the slopes of the mountains. It is truly a tapestry of October colors. I appreciated the beauty of those moments. But we should know that each second is a remarkable gift, regardless of our surroundings. The miracle of our breath passing through our lips, our brains firing away with thoughts, and our bodies moving and twisting and lifting, are all wonders for which we should praise and thank almighty God daily. Acknowledging that each second is a gift from God to all of us, I will try to remember to respect time and not to waste it.
